Interested in how people live, how cultures differ and why these differences exist Britt Dorenbosch studied sociology prior to art academy. In her present work you see that man and its surroundings still intrigue her. The first series Home, Maassingel and MT are based on the interiors of her mother, aunt and grandmother. Since then she focuses on her own environment. Choosing images from her direct surroundings and further exploring the concept of home.

Objects play a central part in the paintings. With clear structures and powerful colour combinations Britt enhances simplified shapes of the images she sees in her direct surroundings. Sometimes the objects have been withdrawn from their environment. In other cases she paints the things in the exact state she has found them, only changing minor details.

Britt keeps her work lively by painting quick and accurate. With her temperamental and sketchy brush strokes she investigates the technical side of painting. In this research she seeks how to simplify the images without affecting their recognisability. Thereby a tension between figuration and abstraction is a key element in her work.

The composition provides an extra layer in the experience the paintings offer. Objects are arranged in atypical still lives or placed solitarily in the middle of the painting. Recognizable elements such as a piece of chicory, an orange or a bottle draw attention and account for further exploration of the composition. Isolating and enlarging the subject places it on a pedestal
